Back from New York City

Went to the Big Apple yesterday and worked there all day today. Was a beautiful day in Manhattan. But it was all work and I'm back home in Milwaukee already. Don't miss living there at all.

Cincinnati Marathon Photos

This is a Starting Photo. It's 6:30 am EDT. It's 5:30 am CDT back home. This is too early to start a race. I'm third from the left in the white t-shirt and purple shorts. The winner is on my right in the white tank top:

I'm #14 overall, but tied for fourth on an age-graded basis, whatever that means. I also came in 2nd in my division (45-49) and 10th overall (1st in my division) for the Final Mile Endurance Challenge where I sprinted to a final mile time of 6 minutes and 5 seconds, which was the fastest mile of the whole race:

My Stats and Splits - 6:26 per mile pace. Wow - a negative split! I ran the second half of the race a few minutes faster than the first half. It was probably the hills in the early part of the course that slowed be down. There's a prize for the fastest final mile, which is why my pace drops so much at the end. Plus the guy running with me was in the same age category, so I had to beat him:

Me being cheap by taking the bus to the airport in Milwaukee to catch my flight to Cincinnati. Cost: 10 minutes of free time vs. a cab. Savings: $30 - that's a lot of six-paks!

At the Milwaukee Airport. Even with garbage cans close by, somebody was a pig and left his or her trash behind in the waiting area at Mitchell Field:

Sudoku is addicting:

At the Delta Terminal in the Cincinnati Airport - a flying pig:

At the Health & Fitness Expo - another flying pig. God, I'm looking old. Time for some Grecian Formula:

The Pasta Party - very nice:

Arriving back in Milwaukee:

Cheapskate Chris waiting for the City Bus to take him home. Another $30 savings vs. a cab, and curbside service to boot!:

Back from Cincinnati ... Awesome Time

Well, I'm back in Milwaukee after running the Flying Pig Marathon in Cincinnati this morning at 6:30 am EDT. I slept well the night before, but was worried I would oversleep. I arrived yesterday afternoon, went and picked up my number and poked around the Sports Expo, then went down by the Ohio River to see the start and finish lines. I met some girls who were doing exactly what I was doing, so went to the Pasta Party with them and had a great time listening to the live bands and eating more than my fill of pasta. I woke up at 5 am, which was like 4 am back home, had a light breakfast and headed down to the start of the race. I actually was right on the starting line, so should be in some of the official race photos. There was only one wheel chair racer in the entire field of 15,000 people. I ran 2:48:31, which is pretty good for me, coming in 14th overall and 2nd in my 45-49 age division. There wasn't a whole lot of competition since there is no prize money. We started along the river in Cincinnati, ran across the bridge for 4 miles in northern Kentucky, then crossed back over and finished the race running through the Cincinnati suburbs. The first 10 or 11 miles was quite hilly and the wind was always in our face. It felt good though. It was mostly downhill after mile 12 or so. It reminded me so much of the New Las Vegas Marathon. I ended up running the second half of the race a little faster than the first half thanks to the guy I was running with who happened to be in my age category. It made me run really fast at the end. I don't think I've ever run so fast in the last two miles ever. After the race I ran into one of the girls I had dinner with last night. She had just finished the 1/2 Marathon course. What a coincidence to see her. I made a bee line for the hotel, showered and raced to the airport hoping to catch an earlier flight home, but they were boarding as I was checking in, and the airport is so huge, I didn't have enough time to make the flight. So I waited two hours for my flight and got home at 2 pm. The bus happened to be at the station when I came out of baggage claim, so I grabbed that back to downtown, saving myself $25. The bus only takes 15 minutes longer than a cab and drops me off a few blocks from home. I'm not hurting at all, so I got on my bike and pedalled around for an hour. That should help me recover sooner. Maybe I'll start running in a few days, but first a well-deserved rest.

Off to Cincinnati

Well. the day is here. Time to leave for Cincinnati and the "Flying Pig Marathon." I leave at 10 am CDT and arrive at 12:30 EDT. I'll go to my hotel, pick up my race number, poke around the Expo an downtown, then go take a nap before dinner at 6 pm. I slept well last night. The night before the night before is when you need to sleep since the night before for some people can be a nervous time. The only thing I'm worried about is oversleeping and missing the 6:30 am start. But I'll get a wake up call and set an alarm. My hotel is a few blocks from the start/finish. I know a few people running the race so may "run" into them. More from the road later maybe depending on Internet access.

5 Days to the Pig

I running the "Flying Pig Marathon" in Cincinnati this weekend. I've been taking it easy on the running this week so I'm well rested. I head down there Saturday morning. I'll pick up my race number, browse the Expo, carb up at the Pasta Party then hit the sack early. The race starts at 6:30 am, which is 5:30 am Milwaukee time. I plan to finish under 3 hours. I will then head back to the hotel a few blocks away, shower, and head to the airport in time for my 1:00 pm flight back to Milwaukee. A very quick trip.
